On May 15, 2018, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of about 16,000 NY Thermal (NTI) Trinity Tft and Slant/Fin CHS residential and commercial boilers. The concern is that the products may present a carbon monoxide (CO2) poisoning hazard.
Consumers are advised to contact the installer or distributor immediately to schedule a free repair. So far, no injuries have been reported but because carbon monoxide is a deadly gas, the commission is urging consumers to act quickly.
NTI Gas Boilers May Emit Carbon Dioxide
The boilers are manufactured by NY Thermal Inc., of Canada. The company stated on its website that it had discovered “a potential issue with the secureness of the grommet seal inside select Tft boilers.” This grommet seal may fail, reducing in size over time or dislodging during use. If that happens, the boiler may emit carbon monoxide.
Carbon monoxide poisoning is particularly dangerous because the gas is odorless and colorless, so people aren’t aware that it’s around. It’s found in fumes produced from burning fuels in, for example, cars and trucks, small engines, stoves, grills, fireplaces, gas ranges, or furnaces, and it can build up indoors to the point that it poisons people and pets.
Common symptoms of CO2 poisoning include headaches, upset stomach, chest pain, dizziness, weakness, and confusion.
NTI Encourages Consumers to Schedule a Boiler Repair Immediately
Gas boilers are furnaces fueled by gas that heat a home or commercial residence. They heat up water that is then moved by a pump to carry heat into radiators in all the rooms. The NTI boilers that are affected by this recall include 19 different models ,which are listed below.

NY Thermal has advised consumers to first determine if they have a product affected by the recall by finding the model number on the top right-hand side of the boiler and checking it against the list. The products were sold by NTI professional wholesalers, heating and plumbing contractors, and home appliance wholesalers from October 2011 through January 2018.
If yours is one of those boilers affected, call the installer immediately and ask for a free “NTI Tft Grommet Seal Upgrade.” The company also advises everyone to be sure they have a functional carbon monoxide detector on each floor level.
If you do not have a record of your installer, you can call a local plumbing & heating contractor, and have them contact NTI at 1-800-688-2575 for an upgrade kit. You can also check the website at http://www.ntiboiler.com/ and click on “Urgent Recall Advisory” at the top of the page for more information.
So far, the company has received three reports of the grommet seal deteriorating or becoming dislodged, after which the boiler leaked condensation and carbon monoxide.
